The Sunrise Brass is Ryan, Tom, Brittney, Ben and Nick.
We're all Gustavus Adolphus College alumni who were heavily involved in music during our time at GAC. Our combined experiences range from band and orchestra, to chamber ensembles, jazz bands, and even choir. Post graduation, we wanted to continue sharing our love of music with audiences in our communities. To this end, The Sunrise Brass was born. Get to know more about each of us by reading below!
Ryan Masso, trumpet, is a 2017 graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College.
Nick Hamberg, trumpet, is a native of the SW Metro and graduated Gustavus Adolphus College in 2013 with degrees in Computer Science and Mathematics. For the past four years he has worked as an Infrastructure Engineer at Cigna in Eden Prairie. A brass enthusiast, he also performs regularly with the Twin Cities Brass Band. When not at rehearsal, Nick enjoys crossword puzzles, cooking, and anything to do with technology.
Brittney Hamberg, horn, hails from Appleton, WI. She started playing the horn in 6th grade and fell in love! She graduated from Gustavus in 2012 with a BA in Music and French. During her time there, she was able to participate in two international music tours with the Gustavus Wind Orchestra and Gustavus Symphony Orchestra, and also studied abroad independently in France for 6 weeks. After Gustavus, she went to study with Jeff Nelsen at Indiana University before moving back to Minnesota. In her extra time, she enjoys cooking delicious meals and traveling.
Ben Whalen, trombone, studied Music Performance and Religion at Gustavus and now works as the Director of Youth Ministry and Community Development at House of Prayer Lutheran Church in Richfield. He has been playing trombone for 15 years in concert bands, orchestras, jazz bands, and small ensembles. Aside from The Sunrise Brass, he currently plays in the Minneapolis Trombone Choir and occasionally at church. His other interests include camping, biking, skiing, board games, and puns.
Tom Liska, tuba, is from Plymouth, MN. He regularly performs with the Star of the North Concert Band in Fridley and the Calvary Brass at Calvary Lutheran Church in Golden Valley. He also performed with multiple groups at Gustavus including the Tuba-Euphonium ensemble. In his spare time, Tom enjoys cooking, reading, fishing, and spending time outdoors.
